Quarantining Your New Fish
Nlesblu only ships the healthiest fish and we take many steps to ensure that all our fishes are disease free. However, water borne diseases can appear when fishes are shipped for long distances due to deteriorating water quality.
This is also why we do not recommend pouring shipping water into your tank!
We quarantine all our imported fishes and make sure they are disease free before shipping.
We all want the best for our fish and that includes ensuring that they do not get diseases or get sick from new additions to the tank.
As a home aquarium is a closed system, disease outbreaks happen very quickly and can often mean a difference between a previously healthy tank and a tank full of sick fish.
Having a quarantine tank helps prevent disease outbreaks in your home aquarium.
A quarantine tank does not have to be fanciful or huge, as long as it can house the quarantined fish comfortably for 2 weeks. Used aquariums or large water containers are sufficient to act as quarantine tanks.
Basic requirements for a quarantine tank are :
1) Clean tank
2) Used water from your existing aquarium
3) Dimmed lighting
4) Basic filtration (Frequent water changes can replace this)
5) To be placed without too much external disturbances
It is a good idea to set up a quarantine tank a couple of days before your new fish arrives.
When you receive the new fish, release the fish into the prepared quarantine tank using the acclimation methods described.
Once the fish is in the tank, observe the fish. It is natural for it to be sitting at the bottom as it has travelled a long way to reach you and will need some time to recover. The fish should return to its original healthy state within a few hours of being in the quarantine tank.
DO NOT REMOVE THE FISH FROM THE QUARANTINE TANK YET.
There might be dormant diseases which take some time to show up. The purpose of the quarantine tank is to give it enough time for the dormant diseases to appear. (2 weeks)
During quarantine, continue to feed and observe the fish as usual. It is generally good if the fish begins eating as a good appetite is a sign of good health. A friendly reminder to feed only what the fish can finish in a few minutes as overfeeding can result in deteriorating water conditions which may affect the overall health of the fish.
In the event that the fish falls sick, determine the illness by consulting us, or a fish expert. There are many communities out there which can offer advice.
Begin the appropriate medication and extend the quarantine period to 2 weeks from the date of diagnosing the illness.
Continue to observe the fish and maintain good water quality.
Once the fish returns to health, it is generally good advice to be prudent and have the fish in quarantine for an additional week.
Now, you are ready to add the fish into your main tank!
Acclimation when shifting between quarantine tanks to your main tank is not necessary as the water should be similar.
Clean the quarantine tank along with its equipment with warm water and vinegar for storage.
Enjoy your new addition in the tank!
